Dreyer was appointed commandant-general. In April at the head of two or three hundred men he crossed the Vaal, but only to find that the Free State people had rallied round President Boshof, and that a strong force was in arms to resist him. Command- ant-General Schoeman from Zoutpansberg and Com- mandant-General Joubert from Lydenburg also were offering military assistance to the Free State, so that Mr. Pretorius's cause was utterly hopeless. A very short experience proved to the people of Zoutpansberg that they could not stand alone.
