On the other hand, they were met by the complaint that some, at any rate, of the lines of frontier that have hitherto been proposed between the European possessions of Turkey, to the north and west of Constantinople, and the areas in Eastern Thrace in the occupation of the Greeks, afforded insufficient protection to the Turkish capital, w T hich might find itself exposed in the future, either to the military menace of invasion or to the invidious propinquity of a neighbour with whom it had recently been at war.
