lii. 275. These Letters were copied from the originals in the possession of Lady Frances Vernon Ilarcourt, a descendant of the writer. Lady Brilliana was a daughter of Edward Lord Viscount Conway, and received her name in allusion to her birth at the Brill in Holland, whilst her father was Lieut. -Governor there. Her husband Sir Robert Ilarley was a very active member of the Long Parliament, and a leading supporter of the Republican party in the county of Hereford. His wife defended the castle ...of Brampton Bryan when besieged by the Royalists in 1C43; it surrendered after three weeks, and her death ensued three months after. Her letters, which are chiefly addressed either to her husband or her eldest son, are charming effusions of domestic affection, iu the midst of danger and difficulty.
