The law of definite proportùms is much more general than Gossen suspected ; but Menger also failed to perceive the fact. In the most general form it signifies that every quality of things exists only in a given measure, either known or un- known, and that co...nsequently every relation among things, of whatever kind, ^ being a relation of quality, may be expressed mathematically. The theory of > utility and of instrumental commodities has on the other hand made a notable ^ advance — notable not in respect of its magnitude, but in respect of the difficulty of making it, — through v.
