"But, " as a very highauthority declares, "the limitations in this change in type are strictlydrawn, so that one type can assume only the characters of another whichis closely related to it. This change of one form of closely relatedtissue into another is called _metaplasia_. .. .
"When differentiation h...as advanced so that such distinct types of tissuehave been formed as connective tissue, epithelium, muscle, nerve, _thesedo not again merge through metaplasia. There is no evidence thatmesoblastic tissues can be converted into those of the epiblastic orhypoblastic type, or vice versa_.
