Introduce this condition, and a perception of light at once follows. This third condition concerns the first two members of our series : with respect to them, and in so far as the foregoing illustrations are concerned, we draw two conclusions — first, that the co-operation of excitant and sense-impression is indispensable to the final result (seeing) ; second, that both are external to, 'and independent of consciousness, and of any conception arising therein. A similar trial may be made with any other nerve of sense. J() salt or sugar ; a sense-impression at onee arises, and is presently followed by a per- ception of taste in consciousness.
