I answered that I wasn't afraid of the police, I wasn't afraid of the whole world. Then he fell on the bed and cried and shook; I thought his soul would come out of his body. Then he stood up, looked me straight in the face, gave me a frightful box on the ear and went. I have never seen him since.

His mother was so ill that he gave up his lodgings. He needed the money for medi- THE VICTIM.
