When Brown lay in prison after the collapse of the Virginia project, Emerson uttered these words (re- moved ten years later from the printed address) : "That new saint, than whom none purer or more brave was ever led by love of men into conflict and death — the new saint — awaiting his martyrdom, and who, if he shall suffer, will make the gallows glorious like the cross." He welcomed the outbreak of war in 1861 with an enthusiasm which recalls the conduct of his grandfather, William Emerson, on the morning of the 19th of April, 1775.
