Merewether, Esq., of the Norfolk Circuit. Mr. Justice Hayes^ tenure of the dignified position to which he had attained was unhappily of short duration, barely fifteen m...onths having expired ere he was attacked by a fatal illness in his private room at West- minster after a hard day^s work at Nisi Prius.
From this attack he never rallied, expiring a few days afterwards at the age of sixty-five. No man was more highly estimated by his brethren of the long robe for his legal acumen than the late judge, also from the deep sense of honour that was known to have characterized every portion of his professional life ; while his gene- ral good-nature and exquisite social qualities were the pride of those who had the privilege of being admitted into the enjoyment of his society, or of being numbered as one of his friends.
