There are three dialects or forms of these letters the Assyrian or Babylonian, the Median, and the Persian, and to one of these may be re- ferred all the cuneiform inscriptions that are known to exist. The most remarkable inscription in this trilingual cuneiform character is that on the sacred rocks at a place called Behistun, ("God's Place") on the western frontiers of Persia. Here Darius, "the great King, " inscribed his conquests and the most important events of his reign.
