There we pre- pared our own dinner, Prince Arthur being cook and I footman. Afterwards we slept on a truss of hay. When we first arrived at the hut there was a heavy thunderstorm ; but it soon passed off, and the view, with a lovely moon shining on the snow all round us, was quite superb. On the 5th (Saturday) we were up at 4 a.m., and off on our tramp by 5. We walked across the Oauli glacier, to the top of the Ewig Schneehom (about 12,000 feet high), where we had a good view and where we break...fasted. Then crossing the Lauteraar glacier, we reached the Orimsel Hospice about 6. After a short walk on the Sunday, we started again at 4 a.m. on the 7th, with guides as before, and walked to the top of the Oberaar-joch (about 10,000 feet high) ; then continuing by way of the Oberaar glacier, and Viescher glacier, reached the little inn on the iEggischhom at 8 p.m. (a tramp of sixteen hours). We had found the Viescher glacier very difficult. It was said to have been worse than it had been for years.
