Then we continued our journey to Wilna, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lith- uania, and on the 27th arrived in front of this town, occu- pied by the Russians ; and it may truly be said that there, and there alone, military operations began, for up to thiJ time the Emperor had traveled as he would have done in the departments of the interior of France.
