The place of his nativity was Washington Coun- ty, Pa. , and he had received his early academic education at Canonsburg. Rev. James Patterson gathered a large congregation in the Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, and was eminently a practical man, going into the high ways and lanes of the city, and experienced many seasons of numerous ingather- ings into his church. He sought not to be distinguished for his learning, but sought to win souls, and spake as " a dying man to dying men.
