So that ne- gotiation ended, Dr. Miller not being willing to join us without Dr. Goldsmith. We will say, by the way, that the Surgical chair is divided in many of the best schools in the country ; a...nd, also, that we never contemplated an increase in the expense of the students by any proposed increase of the chairs. In this connection, allow us to say that our recommendation for an increase in the number of chairs is fully sustained by the usage in other schools, as is set forth by the accompanying abstracts ; in contravention of the posi- tion assumed in the preamble and resolution adopted at a meeting of your Board on the 10th of June, in the following words, viz : " And whereas, the programme aforesaid proposes to increase the number of Professorships in the Medical Department, which in- crease is contrary to usage in such cases, and is unnecessary." i 14 Not long after the occurrences above related, Dr.
