]\Iy Dear Sir : I have received yours of the 15th inst. , informing me that you liave been collecting a few testi- monials regarding your military career, and expressing a Avish for a letter from me, setting forth the value and amount of your services while under my command.
It gives me pleasure, ...in repl}'. To bear my testimony to your gallantry and efficiency as a battery commander in the numerous engagements in which the Sixth Corps took part, from May, 1863, when you first came under my command, till October, 1864, when you were mus- tered out with your battery by expiration of term of ser- vice. Durhig this period occurred some of the most im- portant and bloody battles of the war, amongst which were Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, tlie succession of fights from the Wilderness to Petersburg, and subse- quently the victories of Opequan and Fisher's Hill, in the Valley of Virginia, besides many minor engagements in which tliore was much hard fighting.
