The conference was resumed at Hampton Court, in the presence of the English Council. So far the Regent had played his cards well, and there was good hope that he might yet win all. But circumstances began to combine against him. In Scotland the Hamiltons, assisted by Mary's mis- guided friends, were busy as ever in their own interest. The country was flooded from end to end with all manner of ridiculous rumours. The Regent had been committed to the Tower, he had surrendered the custody of the i...nfant king, he was bargaining to deliver up the fortresses. It is asserted that Sir James Balfour, a particularly active agent in the dissemination of such dangerous rubbish, took his orders from Lethington. Why Lethington should wish to force the Regent to return, so that Morton and such might be left be- hind unfettered, is not easy to see. But it has become a sort of habit to associate his name with the insoluble. Whoever was responsible, the circulation of these nonsensical figments produced a general feeling of unrest, which a knowledge of one at least of the tainted quarters from whence they eman- ated was insufficient to allay.
