Because of the retarding effect of the static capac- ity of a cable there is always a lag, more or less, in the arrival of the signals at the distant end, so that two letters sent very closely, with- out proper space, will look like one at the receiving end, and if the necessary elements are there they will form a distinct letter, such as "F" for "in, " "R" for "En, " etc.
