In these two exceptional cases the writers seemed to plume themselves on their own dignity and that of all their profession, assuming that the fact that a man had good standing in the army put him on such a plane as to make it improper for a civilian to be inquiring after his qualities. It seemed to be the pleasure of every one to give me special attention and 452 REMINISCENCES do all possible to get for me the information I desired. I was so impressed with the extra politeness and courtesy of everybody that I could not help speaking of it in faculty meeting on my return to Mount Vernon, with the im- plied or expressed query whether we might not be more helpful to the college if we could treat our visitors in somewhat like happy fashion.
