I am not able to state the number of the United States troops, who, under the command of Col. LEAVENWORTH, first KEMINISCENCKS. 473 occupied a spot near the mouth of the Minnesota River, in 1819. They erected temporary barracks, the remains of which are still visible, on the South side near the present ferry, in which they passed the winter. DANIEL W. HUB- BARD was the first man who felled a tree on the camping ground. During the winter of 1819-20, the scurvy broke out in a most malignant form,
... and raged so violently that, for a few days, garrison duty was suspended, there being barely well men enough in the command to attend to the sick, and to the interment of the dead. So sudden were the at- tacks, that soldiers in apparent good health when they went to bed, were found dead in the morning. One man who was relieved from his tour of sentinel duty, and stretched himself upon the bench of the guard room, four hours after, when he was called upon to resume his post, was discovered to be lifeless.
