This my first cruise ofi^ Toulon lasted many weeks, without being marked by any circumstance well worth recording. Most parts of the Mediterranean are subject to be visited by thunder-squalls, in which the light- ning frequently causes considerable mischief; and it was remarked that the atmosphere was more than commonly charged with electric matter in the A NAVAL OFFICER. 17 autumn of 1808 — scarcely an evening passing, during several weeks, without a display of fire- works in the heavens. Thes...e squalls happening at night, are often attended with danger ; and it requires some coolness, attention, and skiU, on the part of the officer on the watch, to guard against accidents, and, when in heavy gusts and sudden shifts of wind, the fleet is taken ahack, and the whole order of sailing is deranged, to extricate his own ship from the confusion, and place her in a clear and safe position, until the squall be passed, and the wind assume once more a true and steady direction. Sometimes it is curious, and not a little interesting, to mark the gathering and approach of these squalls.
