Calhoun's eyes were brilliant and dazzling, stamped with genius, whilst those of Judge Cheves were sedate and thoughtful. I was strongly impressed with his great talents, ability, frankness and impartiality when I met him in 1831. Sitting at the supper table one evening, General Thompson, who was then bitterly opposed to Henry Clay, remarked that Clay was a vindictive man, and rarely spoke well of his opponents. Judge Cheves replied that he boarded with Clay several months, and never heard him ...say a harmful word of any one, and that he thought him remarkably circumspect and generous in that respect. General Thompson re- 242 Langdon Cheves. marked that Clay had no doubt changed a good deal in his feelings and character since the judge knew him ; that he was cowed and embittered against the world in consequence of the abuse Avhich had been deservedly heaped upon him. Clay deserves no kindness from a Southern man ; but he is not a dejected man, nor does he feel himself disgraced by anything that has happened.
