The reduction in the expenditures of the transportation depart- ment, is owing to the introduction of such improvements in the cars and machinery as experience has shewn to be advantageous, as well as to the constant efforts of all the principal officers of the company to conform to the wishes of the board, by observing in the management of their respective departments the strictest eco- nomy consistent with the necessity of keeping them at all times in a proper state of efficiency.
