They had fought for every foot of ground gained, over the roughest field I ever have seen ; the chasms running in every direction ; the lava cutting like glass, and exposed at every step to the fire of the con cealed foe. The line was closed and the troops bivouacked on the ground they had so gallantly won ; their success had cost some brave men, the loss being three enlisted men killed, 1st Lieutenant Charles P.
