...cers as to what extent convicts were permitted to perform clerical work in the prison. They are allowed, I was told, to make entries in the books of the Commissary Department, but not in those of the Clerk of the prison.
The per capita cost last year was 45 cents per day, including all repairs; but excluding these, the cost was 36-| cents per capita, and of this amount a per capita cost of 12 cents was required for subsistence.
The convicts are not allowed to put furniture in their cells. They are allowed a looking-glass costing 25 cents, and all else is required to be in keeping with their surroundings.
