Hot many months ago, speaking on a similar occasion at Plattsburg, I said that the battle of Plattsburg made the Treaty of Peace possible, because it had its effect in bringing the British to moderate their demands so that terms honourable to all could be agreed upon— Peace with Honour could be secured. The Battle of Plattsburg made the Peace possible ; the Battle of New Orleans, in my view, made it palatable and therefore permanent, In saying this, I do not affect to give the official Canadian view— if there is such a view— not the Canadian view, but one Canadian's view, which may or may not recommend itself to others, Canadians or otherwise.
