... a native of Peterboro, N. H., and a residentof Illinois since 1881. Prior to 1840 the habitations of the pioneers were almost wholly of logs, generally one room, all the way from twelve to twenty feet square, usually but one story in height, with a huge chimney in one end, of stone foundation and cat and clay top. The cats were usually split out of oak about one inch square, laid up cob-house fashion and plastered inside and out with clay mortar.
