It is true that for a CHICAGO, JULY, 1893. 21 short time they accepted the current belief in the existence of such a crime, and they actually did put to death nineteen vic- tims of the delusion ; but it is also true that they were the earliest of all the Christian world to discern the absurdity of the prevailing belief, and they were the first to discard and denounce the cruel persecution of imagined evil doers.
