In the spring of 190S Congress appropriated $250,000 for the work covering the fiscal year from July 1, 1908, to June 30, 1909. In addition to this amount it was necessary to spray and care for 130 miles of strips that had been thinned during the previous years, so that in the summer of 1909 more than 300 miles of roadside were given careful attention, which undoubtedly prevented many new colonies BEGINNING OF WORK BY THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT, 43 from becoming established.
