Special effort was made in the fall to thoroughly scout the region outside of the towns known to be infested in New Hampshire. In the spring of 190S Congress appropriated $250,000 for the work covering the fiscal year from July 1, 1908, to June 30, 1909. The work of clearing roadsides was vigorously pushed throughout the year so that by the spring of 1909, 170 additional miles of 100-foot strips had been put in good condition for summer treatment. In addition to this amount it was necessary to spray and care for 130 miles of strips that had been thinned during the previous years, so that in the summer of 1909 more than 300 miles of roadside were given careful attention, which undoubtedly prevented many new colonies BEGINNING OF WORK BY THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT, 43 from becoming established.
