" Mr. , Viele then describes the intricate topography of the island of New York : " Abrupt ledges of rock, deep and nar- row valleys, sudden upheavals and contortions of the geographi- cal formations, " with a surface varying in elevation from 5 to 150 feet above high-water mark.
