REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON TOWN AND COUNTY OFFICERS.
AETICLE VII.
1 Section 1. Sheriffs, clerks of counties, including the registrar of the city and county 2 of New York, and the registers of deeds in all the counties where such registers are 3 now or may be hereafter autliorized by law, coroners and district attorneys, shall be 4 chosen by the electors of the respective counties once in every three years, and as often 5 as vacancies shall happen. Sheriffs shall hold no ot...her office, and be ineligible for the 6 next three years after the termination of their offices. They may be required by law 7 to renew their security from time to time, and in default of giving such new secul'ity, 8 their offices shall be deemed vacant. But the county shall never be made responsible 9 for the acts of the sheriff. District attorneys, while in office, shall be ineligible to any 10 othes office. The Governor may remove any officer in this section mentioned, within 11 the term for which he shall have been elected, giving to such officer a copy of the 12 charges against him and an opportunity of being heard in his defense.
