During the afternoon of March 19 the Prince of Prussia's residence was like an inn. People of all sorts and conditions came and went.
Towards evening some one came and said that a deputation would arrive which would demand of. the Prince his renunciation of the succession to the throne. The Prince then wrote to the King, ' If I... can help you by staying here and by renouncing my right of succession, tell me so and I will do it ; if, however, I cannot help you by so doing I will leave.' The King desired him to leave, and the Prince and Princesses drove away secretly in the evening to Spandau ; their children went to Potsdam, where they stayed with Curtius and von Unruh.
A full and vivid account of the Prince of Prussia's flight is to be found in von Petersdorff's King Frederick William TV. The writer of this account was the Countess Oriola, lady-in-waiting to the Princess of Prussia, and daughter of Bettina von Arnim- Brentano, the lively little person who, at the age of seventeen, sent word to the elderly Goethe that she burned with love for him, as Mignon for Wilhelm Meister, and pursued him for years » Preussische Jahrbiioher, Bd.
