During the first few years, the department depended upon four diminutive engines with ROCKFORD 47 which to battle with the fire monster. Its water supply was obtained from the creek, river and wells. These cisterns were filled by pumping water from the river and were used until the install- ment of the water works in 1875-6. A report of 1880 shows that the fire department's total expense to the city was $1, 845.
