Inspired by these incitements, and thirsting for fame and conquest, HERNANDO DE SOTO, a Spanish cavalier, in the year 1538, fitted put an expedition for the con quest of Florida. " He stopped in the island of Cuba, long enough to make arrangements for its government, during his absence ; and then proceeded for Florida, which he reached in the month of May, 1539, and anchored in a bay, which he called Espiritu Santo ; now known as Tampa Bay.
