What reading level is Rome volume 2 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
At that period, we learn, three legions were stationed in Britain, one on the Upper Rhine (Germania Superior), two on the Lower Rhine (Germania Inferior), one in Italy, one in Spain, one in Numidia, onein Arabia, two in Palestine, one in Phoenicia, two in Syria, two in Mesopotamia, two in Cappadocia, two in Lower Mcesia, one in Upper Moesia, two in Dacia, four in Pannonia, one in Noricum, one in Rhaetia. Two had no permanent station, but were used, as their services were required, in different ...parts of the empire. From a passage of iElius Lampridius*, the numerical strength of a legion at this period ap- pears to have been 5000 men. This, compared with the total force of modern European armies, would ap- pear quite insignificant, if it were not borne in mind, that tlie legions, in these days of degeneracy, only formed, as it were, the kernel or skeleton of the army, and still retained the discipline and arms of old Rome. * Alex. Sever, c. 1. CHAP. III. MILITARY SYSTE3I. 249 In these times the bulk of armies was often drawn from various nations, equally various in their weapons and order, and, perhaps, contained only one or two legions in its ranks.
