CHAPTER SEVEN That was the crux of it. The Wild Tocks had no confidence that men could work with rorks. The threat of abandonment was potent … almost too potent … the mere mention of it had roused to life hatred which was never altogether still. In the testing, their survival meant less to them than did their pride. So much for now for the Wild ones; Ran’s scheme, if it would work at all, would require the Tame Tocks’s aid as well. It would require every person possible. Never at any time had the Guild Station dealt with the Tame Tocks as equals; there had not ever been any “advisory council” drawn from among them, or anything like that. But from time to time the whole number of them had been summoned to hear what the Guild Station wished them to hear and to obey.
