I answer, as- suredly, yes, in the pitiful, trifling amount paid them for their labor, and even that could have been used to so much better purpose, if it were intended as a charity, by the erection of hospitals, schools, or other public buildings which would not have ceased to help the people when their erection was completed, but would have gone on blessing posterity so long as they should stand.
