The creating acts of each day are enumerated, first, second, sixth, and at its close, creation w^ork ceased, and on the seventh there was no creating energy put forth : rest, cessation from this form of action, characterized this day. God from Sinai giving the reason for the command, — Remember the Sabbath day, refers to this order. " Six days... shalt thou labour and do all thy work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God, for he rested on the seventh day : wherefore the Lord blessed, not the seventh, but the Sabbath day and hallowed it. " Seventh day, in these five cases, is merely descriptive — not nominal — not giv- ing the proper name.
In Exod. Xii. 15, 16, describing the feast of un- leavened bread, he directs that, on the first day, leaven shall be put away until the seventh day. These two instances have no necessary connection with the day of sacred rest.
