This work had originally been intended for performance in the open-air theatre of the town of Orange, where the 70 saint-saEns action of the piece is laid ; this intention, however, had to be abandoned. The town of Orange has been invaded by Teutonic hordes and is about to be given over to pillage, when Marcomir, their chief, is struck by the beauty of Floria, the priestess of Vesta, and in order to win her love consents to spare the inhabitants and to withdraw his soldiers. Floria, after a short struggle, agrees to belong to the conqueror. It appears that the Roman consul Euryalus has been killed in battle by an unknown man.
