Ruth mocked me again for having chosen the life that was mine, calling me a “make-believe nigger,” whereupon I slammed my fist into the pasty flesh of his dark face and struck him down; it was a blow I should have struck long before that day, and one which, filling me momentarily with joy, would lead, on that same afternoon, to my own death as a player in the Negro American Baseball League.
