The principal drawback is its tendency to become slipperj'. This condition has apparently increased in direct proportion to the number of automobile regis- trations. Every machine drops more or less oil which is spread and distributed by passing vehicles until the surface becomes smooth and glided. The action of the rubber on the asphalt during the summer months further tends to bring to the surface any excess oils which were not ab.sorbed in the mixing at the plant.
An attempt was made during ...the winter months of 1912-13 to overcome the above mentioned slippery condition by adding crushed rock to the asphalt before rolling. The asphalt was placed on the street as in any ordinary case; the material spread and raked to a uniform thickness. The rock was then spread as uniformly as possible, care being taken to leave no "pockets." The hand roller was then run over the layer and followed by a five ton steam roller.
This sent the rock down to the hard foundation but left it flush with the asphalt surface.
