‘This is good news, isn’t it?’ she said, as she took down her new blue linen bed-gown.
‘Yes, it is,’ said Francis. ‘At least it shows that my malicious thoughts about Jonathan Shooks had no ill effect on the children, thank God.’ Ambrose drove them down to the village. A small crowd was already gathered outside the Buckley house, although there was no sign yet of Jonathan Shooks’s black calash. Francis helped Beatrice down from Ambrose Cutler’s wagon and they went inside.
