What reading level is Scottish Church History volume 8 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
1 4. Describe the state of things in Scotland after the Settlement. CHAPTER IX. THE SECESSIONS. The first event which affected seriously the position of the Church after the Revolution was the Union of England and Scotland, in 1707. For several years previously that consumma- tion was foreshadowed ; and in various Acts of Assembly passed about that time, one can trace symptoms showing that what was coming was regarded with apprehension. Though the King and the politicians of the period ignored ...the Covenants, these were not quite forgotten by the Church, and their influence is visible in the anxiety displayed for the revival of spiritual religion and for the preservation of the Presbyterian form of government. The importance of such an incident, therefore, as the suppression of the Scottish Parliament could not be overlooked, and if the advantages of the proposed measure were admitted, its disadvantages were also recognised to an extent which made its acceptance by the more earnest Churchmen by no means cordial.
