I know what human na^ ture and what I can do 5 I do not know it from books, but (thank God I) from my own repeated experience. Knowing trtte love, I know, of courfe, the dead body of love, the mechanical part of virtue. I know that our feelings cannot always be equally ftrong and lively ; but how can I conceal from myfelf, that it is not right, not juftifiable, not to make room for ftronger, nobler, and more humane feelings ?
