At the time of Shay's Insurrection, he volunteered his services to General Shepard, at Springfield, and was appointed one of his aids, on that memorable 4 26 SECULAR HISTORY OF THE CHAPTER IV. CHURCHES, PUBLIC LANDS, ETC. The original proprietors of the town, to encourage the rapid settlement of the plantation, erected a church, in the year of 1764, near the spot of ground occupied by the house of the late Mr. John Watts. The immediate district surrounding the church, at this time, was an un- b...roken wilderness. A few years subsequent to the above date, the inhabitants of the town assembled together, and agreed, " that every male person living in the plan- tation, of sixteen years of age and upwards, should spend one day m cutting and clearmg away the foi'est about the meeting-house. " The church was but partially finished, internally, by Mr. Worthington, but it appears that the town worshiped in it, nevertheless, with all of its inconveniences, till the year of 1780, when it was occasion.
