To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
They accepted the appointment and a few days after reported that the said Thomas Hodson would dig gravel on his lot, and had dug to that extent that the said hill was in danger of being destroyed, and that there was no prospect of the town being able to buy him off. That is to say, he would not sell his land to the town. That they saw no way to prevent the destruction of Beacon Hill without the in- terposition of the General Court. It was therefore voted that the representatives should be instr...ucted to move in the legisla- ture for an act by which this and similar mischiefs might be prevented. No law, however, appears to have been passed con- cerning it. " 88 ' THE BEACON AND ITS USE. Hodson continued to dig gravel and fill up the docks, and probably never would have been heard of at the present time but for his persistency in this matter, by which he got his name into history, and may now be regarded as a pioneer in public improvements and possibly as a benefactor of the city. There had been other digging about the hill and its outlying spurs, long before this time ; and no doubt more or less of it at an earlier period than any recorded.
