For the first few days, one heard every few hours a great clamour, and all the men rushing up with sticks and stones to make away with one of these undesirable reptiles. Sometimes they took to the trees, and sometimes to the ground, but wherever it was they were relent- lessly pursued. I was lying on my bed one after- noon, when I heard something flop on to the ground quite close to me, and looking down I caught the eye of a snake, who put out his tongue and danced the forked end at me.
