Where the sand ran out he was exposed up on the creek bank. Although his legs were strong from the countless miles of walking beside the big wagon, so too he knew were the legs of the hardy warriors. He stumbled on a log and pitched face first into the ground, driving the wind from his lungs. As he lay gasping for breath he could hear the unintelligible sing-song voices chattering close by.
