What reading level is Shakespeares Theater book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The public theaters were prob- ably developing a principle of staging that presented action in definite places and successive scenes. But they were not yet ready for the revolutionary practice of the court masque. The plays of Shirley and Dav- enant and others in the last decade of the theater would hardly suggest to any one that their authors had written librettos for the elaborate scenic displays of Inigo Jones. Throughout the Stuart, as in the Tudor, reigns the court entertainments in genera...l kept a different stage from that of the theaters. In spite of the intimate relations between the court and the professional companies, the public houses were prohibited from the expensive experiments and elaborations of the royal shows. Comedy and tragedy remained the denizens of the platform stage. Pageant, pastoral, and masque resided mainly in the scenes and machines of Denmark House or Whitehall. But the splendor and audacity of the court performances helped to inspire more than one author to attempt in the public theater the vis- ualization of dream or fantasy.
