Shakespeare's exclusive use of the ' English ' script was doubtless a result of his provincial education. He learnt only the ' English ' character at school at Stratford-on-Avon, and he never troubled to exchange it for the more fashionable ' Italian ' character in later life. " ^ According to Sir Sidney Lee, therefore, " Shakespeare " was not " highly educated, " had not travelled abroad, and took no trouble about his handwriting. It will be observed also that, according to Sir Sidney, those w...ho could write the " English " and " Italian " hands with equal facihty as a rule employed the " English " character in their correspondence but signed their names in the " Italian " hand. Messrs. Garnett & Gosse, however, in their Illustrated English Literature, make a suggestion eminently characteristic of the methods of Shakespearian biography.
