But when the hour of trial cam...e that was to test his mighty genius under other and different conditions — the chief command of a million men under arms, and the civil government of the greatest republic on earth — he gave so enduring an example of true greatness, not to this nation alone, but to the world, that I may well say of him, as Lord Brougham said of Washington: '"The test of the progress of mankind will be their appreciation of his character." The second — General Grant — was not in boyhood possessed of the will power that afterward proved to be the dominating feature of his character.
